Over 18 months, a team of 22 reporters, filmmakers, and editors from eight countries collaborated to produce Beyond the Binary, a groundbreaking series for CNN As Equals. This five-story project sheds light on the underreported experiences of transgender and non-binary people across the Global South, including Brazil, Bangladesh, India, Kenya, and Thailand. By uncovering the systemic discrimination, exclusion, and violence faced by gender minorities in these regions, the series brings their stories to a global audience and deepens understanding of systemic gender inequality.
It was an honour to partner with CNN to develop the graphic identity and visual assets for the series, complementing the depth of storytelling. Central to the design was a cohesive branding approach that reflected the diversity of each country while aligning with the overarching theme. A visually engaging landing page was created to showcase each country’s story, with customised article templates ensuring a seamless and unified identity across all pages.
Key to the visual storytelling was the creation of abstract, amorphous artwork and illustrations. These organic and fluid elements shift and flow, symbolising infinite diversity, perpetual motion, and the fluidity of gender. Iridescent, smooth, and soothing textures evoke energy and dynamism, serving as a visual metaphor for the resilience and strength of the featured communities. Each article featured a unique "hero" illustration, incorporating a symbolic element inspired by its story, set against a flowing composition to unify the series’ identity. Smaller visual elements, such as icons and accents, further enhanced the design.
Together, these components form a cohesive and impactful visual identity that mirrors the depth, emotion, and significance of the stories in Beyond the Binary. By combining compelling journalism with thoughtful design, the series amplifies the voices of transgender and non-binary individuals in the Global South, creating a powerful platform for these vital narratives.
