Creating a visual identity for NPR’s "Best Music of 2024" lists involved crafting engaging and meaningful designs for National Public Radio (NPR), a renowned American public broadcasting organisation. The brief encompassed the “124 Best Songs of 2024,” “50 Best Albums of 2024,” and the overarching “Best Music of 2024” categories. The goal was to develop a cohesive yet dynamic set of graphics that captured the essence of music while visually distinguishing each list.
The creative direction took inspiration from the fluidity and transformative qualities of liquids, serving as a metaphor for the ever-evolving and boundaryless nature of music. By using oil- and water-based liquids, their natural inability to mix created mesmerising interactions, which were captured through photography. This experimental process resulted in vibrant, dynamic visuals that echoed the emotional resonance and creative fusion inherent in music. Unique colour palettes and subtle texture shifts were applied to each graphic, creating distinct identities for each list while maintaining a cohesive family aesthetic.
The final set of graphics struck a balance between individuality and unity, allowing them to adapt seamlessly across NPR’s digital platforms. Whether featured as website banners, social media posts, or other promotional materials, the designs retained their striking visual appeal. Through this liquid-inspired identity, NPR's "Best Music of 2024" graphics celebrate the vibrancy, flow, and transformative power of music itself.
